Northwood Golf Club, North London

Founded in 1891, this 6473-yard par 71, 18-hole course is one of the finest in what is a highly sought after residential area of North London. Its mature woodland and meandering brook test the skill of even the most accomplished player. Undulating fairways and sweeping doglegs create the feeling of both a parkland and links course.

In December 2016, Course Manager Wesley Walker instigated the construction of three new tees – the ladies’ tees on the 6th and 17th holes, and a winter tee on the 11th hole. Utilising on site material for the sub base, Wesley chose British Sugar TOPSOIL’s Sports&Turf, at a depth of 300mm, to finish off the tees and provide an effective medium with excellent drainage for turf establishment.

“I chose this material as we have had great success with it in the past”  Wesley explained. "The sandy nature of this rootzone is not only great to work with but performs really well in wet conditions. The growth of turf on this rootzone is excellent.”

Northwood Golf Club has a vibrant membership, including an active junior membership and a Ladies Academy offering a one-year programme for those ladies who are new to the game or who have ‘lapsed’ and are returning to give golf another try.

Sports&Turf is a blend of 80% sand and 20% of British Sugar TOPSOIL’s BS3882:2015 certified topsoil. The sand is predominantly medium to coarse (typically 50%) and sub angular in shape, which assists free drainage and promotes good integration into the surface of the turf.

The soil within the blend contains both phosphorous and potassium, which contributes to soil fertility and encourages healthy growth.
