Mr Groundsman #GroundsWeek

MrGroundsman: Wayne Hardy

Background info:

While working for Tesco Wayne was a volunteer for his local football and cricket teams, Exning FC and Burwell CC. The experience gained through volunteering and a change in his work situation spurred Wayne on to start MrGroundsman and follow his passion to be a fulltime groundsman.  Wayne has completed the GMA Level 2 Technical Award in Turf Surface maintenance passing with distinction.  With guidance from the likes of Mel Pooley, Wayne has invested in the machinery needed to build MrGroundsman into a successful business supporting many different sports.

Typical Day:

One of the attractions of being a full time Groundsman is not every day is typical!

Its seasonal work, extremely busy at cross over times.  Start/end of the Football and Cricket seasons.  There are peaks in workload at these times.  In quieter times and bad weather, it’s an opportunity to work on machine maintenance or undertake additional training.

Biggest Challenge:

Workload:  There are peaks and troughs so balancing the workload and employees.  The challenge is managing workload, customer expectations and machinery in those busier months.

Keeping up to date with legislation and policies.  Making sure you have the most up to date knowledge and understanding and how these impacts on the commercial side of the business.

Products and cost increases.  How to keep offering your customers great value in the current climate with higher product prices?
