Electrical Conductivity

The electrical conductivity value is a general measure of the soluble salt content or salinity of a soil. High electrical conductivity values are typically associated with soils that contain high levels of soluble salts (soluble nutrients or otherwise).

Excesses of soluble salts can adversely affect plant life by changing a plant’s water balance and basic function, resulting in wilting or scorching.

A good quality topsoil should have an electrical conductivity value within the range of 100-1500uS/cm (soil : water extract).
