Product integrity
Security of supply – Our reputation for reliability and security of supply is recognised as one of the best in the business.
Sustainable supply chains – We carry out our business honestly, ethically and with respect for the rights and interests of our suppliers. We develop relationships with supplier companies consistent with these basic principles and specifically with respect to human rights and conditions of employment. By co-operating with our suppliers we improve quality and efficiency.
Carbon Footprint – Using the new PAS 2050 method calculation, British Sugar’s low carbon footprint for granulated sugar reflects a focus over many years of improving our energy efficiency. Our homegrown granulated white sugar was assessed to produce 0.6 grams of CO2 equivalent per gram of product.
Local sourcing – We seek to source our raw materials locally. For example, the average transport distance for our UK sugar beet is only 30 miles.
Quality assurance – British Sugar has adopted the principles of quality management and all of our sites are registered to ISO 9001:2000 to encompass corporate activities relating to the manufacture, storage, packaging, distributing and selling of sugar products.
We have completed a programme of certification to the ‘British Retail Consortium Global Standard’ at all of our sites.
Non-GMO – The UK sugar beet crop, from which sugar is extracted, has not been the subject of any genetic modification.
Multi-functional and clean label – Sugar is more than just sweet - it provides bulk, texture and colour to a wide range of foods. Sugar reacts with other ingredients to deliver characteristic flavours and colours. It is highly soluble and is a natural preservative. Many of the products in our extensive range enable a ‘clean’ label declaration.
Traditional and safe – Sugar is easily digested and delivers only 4 calories per gramme. Sugar has a medium glycaemic index (GI). It is a traditional product with a long history of delivering excellent taste and flavour in a wide range of food products.
